Ban Supersized Soft Drinks?

In this week's cover story, you read that New York City recently banned the sale of supersized soft drinks in restaurants, movie theaters, and sports arenas.  City health officials say that extra large drinks are a big reason more than half of New Yorkers are overweight.  They argue that the ban will raise awareness about making healthier food decisions.  Opponents of the ban say it's wrong to single out sugary soft drinks when many foods also contribute to weight gain.  They believe people should be able to make their own choices and that simply telling people what they can't have won't make them any healthier.  What do YOU think?

OK! I am a very funny boy and I have very good reasons for that. Oh sorry! Let's get back to the point. Um I think they should keep huge sodas because if somebody wants to become fat let them! It is their own body and no one elses. Except for the parent's that is.

I think its a smart idea to do this but people can still buy more and more 12 oz. drinks too. So its not really solving the problem.

i tjink the ban is not a good idea because then then they just by 2 32 ounce cups

I think they should leave the sizes just how they are cause it wont make a difference cause they can just order 2 16-ounces and drink both.

i think its a bad idea because i agree that we should be able to make our own decisions on what we drink so who are they telling us what to drink. Yes it will cause people to gain weight but it doesnt make a difference instead of buying large drinks they will buy two or more smaller drinks so either way it won't make a difference.

I think they should ban supersized soft drinks because it isn't healthy and it could cause tons of diseases so technically that would not be good.

I think that New York city should ban the super size drinks because it is just so un-healthy and It probably would make a very small differance in the number of people that have Obesety. I don't think that a whole bunch of people will want to buy 2 or 3 (or even more) drinks because it might cost too much. But if it does make a differance in obesety I think it will make a very small differance. But at least people will be a little bit mroe healthy.

I dont think they should ban the drinks because the people should be able to have a choice in what size drink they want. Another reason they shouldn't ban the supersize drinks is because some familys probaly buy the giant drink and pour it into smaller cups to save money.

I don't think they should ban soda drinks because a lot of people like soda drinks.I know that soda is bad for you but there is no need for banning drinks like soda.

I think the supersize of the soft drinks should be banned because people are gonna get overweight. They should put less sugar cubes.

I think the drink should be banned. Even though people can buy two to get the same amount as the Super sized one. Maybe buying two of them would have less sugar, but the SUPER sized one is like very big and very sugary.

I have two things to say first is it is kinda good to lose a little bit of soda its not going to kill yoand second of all if you want to band soda by how many ounces...is it for wait hold on.....16 ounces, that wont even help obisety dude its like taking one needle out of a million needles people will likley order two drinks and still get the same amount 16 ounces....let that sink in -japheth

What I'm thinking is that even thought they are banning these big jumbo drink sizes, so if they ban a 64 sized drink, some people will just get two 32 sized drinks and just get the same calorie and suger intake with the 64 sized drinks. I know people are trying to make a change and help, but people will just find a loophole around it. People can make their own decitions about there calorie and suger intake. And if they don't, Then so be it....

Ithink the SUPERSIZE drinks shoiuld be banned almost everywhere. It's VERY UNHEALTHY because it's FULL OF SUGAR! I think the U.S needs to start being heathier. I barely drink soda because I don't like all of the bubbles in the drinks it's just too much for me because I'm sensitive. Anyways, they SHOULD BAN SUPERSIZED DRINKS!

I think that it is that persons decision on what they want to drink i mean it is going in there body i know that the the city want more people to be healthy. But that is not there right to decied what other people can and cant drink i mean if some poeple want a large soda than let them get a large soda it is not right. Know i can understand the 46 ounce because i dont think people should be drinking that much but that still isnt right.

I think they should not ban soda because soda is good.I know soda is bad for you but a lot of people like soda. You can ban extra big cups for soda but you just cant ban soda.

I think its not a good idea to ban the extra large drink because we should be able to make our own decisions. I also think if they ban the drinks its not gonna stop the people from getting that much sugar because they are just gonna drink in smaller cups but keep getting more cups.

I think that it's good that New York is banning the super-sized drinks but I think it will not decrease chances in Obesity. The new ban will not make people drink any less soda. They can just buy lots of small drinks that equal to the same size as Super-sized, so what's the point in creating the useless ban? Also, soda is not the only cause in obesity, all sugary and salty foods such as potato chips and donuts. If they want a decrease in obesity then they should ban all fatty foods, but that would be against the people's rightsto do that. If they don't ban all fat foods then nothing good is going to come out of this ban, especially not decreasing obesity.
Overall, I think that the ban of super-sized drinks is not a good idea. Also, it limits soda in only some places. You can still buy a 2 liter Bottle of soda at the grocery store.

I think they should ban super drinks. But they sould still have soda at movies and other places. Maybe, if they do keep them people should share it with there family or friends?

But thats just what I think.

I agree with the opponets because I know people can control themselves but they just choose to be over weight then be healty. So I think New York City and other states should ban Super Size Soft Drinks.

I think they shouldn't ban oversize drinks because people should controll their own bodies. Let them decide what they want. If they want tons of gallons of soda, let them.

Janna said...

I think that they should have the same sizes. If u stop them from buying one big soda they will buy two small ones. I think that having smaller sizes won't help and they should reduce the sizes of other more unhealthier foods first.

devon said...

I think that they should ban the huge drinks because its super sized and its just kind of a wasting the soda on one person while you can you can sell many times as the drink. Plus you never know if the person actaully drank it all if the person didnt that would be a waist.
